Booking a driving test in the UK is a straightforward process once you have everything in order. Before you sit down at your computer (or pick up your phone), make sure you have three key things ready: your provisional driving licence, your theory test pass certificate, and a debit or credit card for payment.
Without all three, you won’t be able to complete the booking. Let’s look at each requirement in detail so there are no surprises.
You need a valid Great Britain or Northern Ireland provisional driving licence. When booking online, you’ll be asked to enter your driving licence number — this is the long number on your photocard licence. Make sure the licence hasn’t expired and that your address is up to date with the DVLA.
If your licence has expired or you’ve lost it, you’ll need to sort that out before you can book. Renewal or replacement can be done through the DVLA website and typically takes about a week, though it can take longer during busy periods.
You must have passed the theory test before booking your practical. Your theory test pass certificate is valid for two years from the date you passed. The practical test must take place within this two-year window, otherwise you’ll need to retake the theory.
You’ll need your theory test pass certificate number when booking. If you’ve misplaced the physical certificate, you can find the number on the pass letter that was emailed to you, or by contacting the DVSA.
Head to gov.uk and search for “book driving test.” Click through to the DVSA booking service. You’ll enter your driving licence number first, then your theory test pass certificate number. The system will verify both against its records.
Next, choose your preferred test centre. You can search by postcode or town name. The system will show you available dates and times. Pick the slot that works best for you, keeping in mind that weekday tests (£62) are cheaper than evening and weekend slots (£75).
Enter your payment details to confirm the booking. You’ll receive a confirmation email with your test date, time, and the address of the test centre. Save this email — you’ll need the booking reference number if you want to change or cancel later.
To book, you don’t need a car or an accompanying driver sorted yet — but you will on test day. Your vehicle must be roadworthy, taxed, insured, and have L-plates. You’ll also need someone over 21 with at least three years’ driving experience to accompany you, unless your instructor is bringing you in their car.
On the day, bring your provisional licence (the photocard). If you have an old-style paper licence, you’ll need a valid passport as well. Without proper ID, the test won’t go ahead and you’ll lose your fee.
Once your test is booked, preparation becomes everything. The Exam Routes app helps you study the real routes at your test centre, so you can practise them during your remaining lessons. Knowing the roads means fewer surprises and more confidence when it matters most.
Before booking, confirm you have: a valid provisional licence with correct details, a theory test pass certificate that won’t expire before your intended test date, and a payment card ready. Once booked, start preparing your vehicle and accompanying driver for test day, and use every remaining lesson to sharpen your skills on the routes you’ll actually be tested on.
