How Early Can You Book a Driving Test? DVSA Booking Windows Explained

The DVSA Booking Window

Planning ahead is one of the smartest moves you can make when it comes to your driving test. The DVSA allows you to book a practical driving test up to 24 weeks (approximately six months) in advance. This window applies to all test centres across England, Scotland, and Wales, and new appointment slots are added on a rolling basis as the calendar advances.

This means you don’t need to wait until you feel completely test-ready before securing a date. Given the current demand, many driving instructors actively encourage pupils to book early and then adjust their lesson plan to ensure they’re prepared by the test date.

When Do New Slots Get Released?

The DVSA adds new test slots to the booking system regularly, though they don’t publish a fixed schedule for releases. In practice, new batches of appointments tend to appear early in the morning, often before 8am. If you’re trying to grab a slot at a popular centre, checking the booking portal first thing in the morning gives you the best chance of finding fresh availability.

Cancellation slots also reappear throughout the day as other candidates reschedule. These can be at any time, so checking periodically during the day can sometimes yield a lucky find — especially at centres that are otherwise booked solid.

Can You Book Before Passing Your Theory Test?

No. You must have a valid theory test pass certificate before the DVSA system will let you book a practical test. Your theory certificate is valid for two years, so as long as you book and take your practical within that window, you’re fine. If you haven’t taken your theory test yet, it’s worth getting that done as a priority — it removes one barrier to booking your practical as early as possible.

Can You Book Before Having a Provisional Licence?

You also need a valid provisional driving licence to book your test. If you’ve applied but are still waiting for it to arrive, you won’t be able to complete the booking process. Provisional licence applications through the DVLA typically take up to three weeks to process, so factor this into your timeline.

The Case for Booking Early

With average waiting times at many popular centres sitting between 12 and 20 weeks, booking early is almost essential. Here’s a practical scenario: if you’ve been having lessons for a few months and your instructor thinks you’ll be test-ready in another 10 to 12 weeks, booking now for a date 16 weeks away gives you a comfortable buffer. If you feel ready sooner, you can always check for earlier cancellation slots.

The worst position to be in is feeling fully prepared for your test but having to wait months for an available date. By booking early, you keep your momentum going and have a clear target to work towards in your lessons.

Can You Change Your Booking Later?

Yes. You can reschedule your driving test for free as long as you give at least three clear working days’ notice. This is the same whether you booked weeks ago or months ago. If something changes — you need more practice, you’re ill, or a better slot opens up — you have the flexibility to move your date without losing money.

If you cancel with fewer than three working days’ notice, you’ll forfeit your fee (£62 for weekday tests, £75 for Saturday/evening tests).

Use the Time Wisely

Once you’ve secured a booking, make the most of the waiting period. Step up your lesson frequency as the date approaches, practise independently with a supervising driver, and use the Exam Routes app to study the actual test routes used at your chosen centre. Familiarity with the roads, roundabouts, and junctions around the test centre can significantly boost your confidence and performance on the day.
