The most convenient and recommended way to book your practical driving test is online through the official Government service. The DVSA booking portal is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and the process takes just a few minutes once you have everything you need to hand.
The official booking page is at gov.uk/book-driving-test. This is the only site you should use — avoid third-party services that charge extra fees on top of the standard DVSA price.
Before you start the booking process, make sure you have three things ready. First, your provisional driving licence number — this is the 16-character code on your photocard licence. Second, your theory test pass certificate number (you’ll find this on the letter or email confirming your theory pass). Third, a debit or credit card to pay the test fee.
The current test fees are £62 for a weekday test and £75 for a Saturday or evening test. Payment is taken immediately when you confirm your booking.
Start by visiting the gov.uk booking page and clicking the green “Start now” button. You’ll be asked to enter your driving licence number and your theory test pass number. The system then verifies that you’re eligible to book — specifically, that your provisional licence is valid and your theory certificate hasn’t expired.
Next, you’ll be prompted to choose a test centre. You can search by postcode, town name, or centre name. The system shows available dates at your chosen centre. If nothing’s available, try other centres nearby — you can search as many as you like.
Once you find a suitable date and time, select it and proceed to payment. After your card payment is processed, you’ll see a confirmation screen with your booking reference number. You’ll also receive a confirmation email — save this, as you’ll need the reference number if you want to change or cancel later.
This is the reality for many learners in 2026. If your preferred centre shows no availability, you have several options. Try different centres — even ones slightly further away, as availability varies significantly from one centre to another. Check back regularly, as cancellation slots are released throughout the day. Early mornings (around 6am) are often the best time to find freshly released slots.
You can also book at the earliest available date you can find, even if it’s months away, and then keep checking for earlier cancellation slots. If a better date appears, you can change your booking online for free (with at least three working days’ notice).
If you’d prefer not to book online, you can call the DVSA booking line on 0300 200 1122. The service is available Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm. You’ll need the same information (licence number, theory pass number, and card details). Phone bookings access exactly the same slots as online bookings — there’s no separate allocation — so availability will be the same.
You can change your test date or cancel your booking through the same gov.uk service. Log in with your driving licence number and booking reference. Changes are free if made with at least three clear working days’ notice. Cancellations within this timeframe also receive a full refund. Cancel too late (fewer than three working days), and you’ll lose the fee.
Once booked, use your preparation time wisely. The Exam Routes app gives you access to detailed test route information for centres across the UK, helping you practise the exact roads you’re likely to drive on during your test. It’s an efficient way to build the local knowledge that can make all the difference.
