How Many Minors to Fail the Theory Test? Pass Marks Explained

Wondering how many minors to fail the theory test? The term “minors” is more commonly used for the practical driving test, but many learners want to know how many questions they can get wrong on the theory test and still pass. Here’s a clear breakdown of the scoring system.

Theory Test Pass Marks in 2026

The theory test has two parts, and you need to pass both in the same sitting:

  • Multiple-choice section: 50 questions, pass mark is 43 out of 50
  • Hazard perception section: 14 video clips, pass mark is 44 out of 75

So for the multiple-choice section, you can get up to 7 questions wrong and still pass. Any more than 7 wrong answers and you’ll fail that section.

How Does the Multiple-Choice Section Work?

You’ll have 57 minutes to answer 50 questions. Each correct answer scores one mark. There’s no negative marking, which means you won’t lose points for guessing — so always select an answer, even if you’re unsure.

The questions are drawn randomly from the official DVSA question bank. Topics include road signs, rules of the road, vehicle safety, vulnerable road users, and environmental matters.

How Does Hazard Perception Scoring Work?

The hazard perception section shows you 14 video clips filmed from a driver’s perspective. Thirteen clips contain one developing hazard each, and one clip contains two developing hazards — giving a total of 15 scorable hazards.

For each hazard, you can score up to 5 marks depending on how quickly you identify it. The maximum total is 75 marks, and you need at least 44 to pass. If the computer detects a pattern of clicking (trying to cheat by clicking constantly), you’ll score zero for that clip.

What Happens If I Fail One Section but Pass the Other?

Unfortunately, you must pass both sections on the same day. If you pass the multiple-choice but fail hazard perception (or vice versa), you’ll need to retake the entire test. There’s no option to carry over a passed section.

Tips to Hit the Pass Mark

  • Aim higher than the pass mark — target 46+ on mock tests so you have a comfortable margin
  • Review wrong answers — when practising, always read the explanation for questions you get wrong
  • Time your hazard perception clicks — click as soon as you see a hazard developing, not when it’s fully formed
  • Don’t click frantically — the system flags suspicious clicking patterns and will score that clip as zero

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the theory test scored differently from the practical test?

Yes. The practical test uses a system of driving faults (minors), serious faults, and dangerous faults. The theory test simply counts correct answers — there are no “minors” in the theory test.

Can I fail the theory test by getting one question wrong?

No. You can get up to 7 multiple-choice questions wrong and still pass that section. However, you must also reach the hazard perception pass mark of 44 out of 75.

Do I get my results straight away?

Yes. You’ll receive your results immediately at the test centre, with a breakdown of your score in each section.
