If you’re about to book your UK driving theory test, understanding exactly how it works will help you feel prepared and confident. This guide walks you through the entire process from booking to receiving your results, so you know precisely what to expect on test day.
You can book your theory test online through the official DVSA service at gov.uk or by telephone. You’ll need your UK provisional driving licence number, an email address, and a debit or credit card for payment. The test fee for car drivers is currently £23.
When booking, you’ll choose a test centre, date, and time. Tests are available at Pearson VUE centres across the UK, so there should be one within reasonable distance of wherever you live.
Arrive at the test centre at least 15 minutes before your scheduled time. At reception, you’ll need to present your valid photocard provisional driving licence for identity verification. Staff will take your photograph and ask you to store personal belongings — including your phone, watch, and any bags — in a secure locker.
You’ll then be guided to a computer workstation where you’ll complete the test. Before starting, you’ll see on-screen instructions and a brief practice question so you can get comfortable with the format.
The first section consists of 50 multiple-choice questions, and you have 57 minutes to answer them. Questions cover topics from The Highway Code, road safety, traffic signs, and general driving knowledge. Most questions offer four answer options, and you select the correct one. Some questions require you to choose more than one answer.
The pass mark is 43 out of 50. You can flag questions to review later and navigate back and forth through the test within the time limit.
The Exam Routes App gives you access to real driving test routes with turn-by-turn navigation. Practise at your own pace and build confidence before test day.
After a short optional break, you’ll begin the hazard perception section. You’ll watch 14 video clips showing real driving scenarios from a driver’s point of view. Each clip contains at least one developing hazard, and one clip contains two.
Your job is to click the mouse as soon as you spot a hazard beginning to develop. The faster you respond (within the scoring window), the more points you earn — up to 5 per hazard. The maximum score is 75, and the pass mark is 44.
Avoid clicking excessively or in a random pattern, as the system will detect this and score that clip as zero.
You’ll receive your results immediately after completing both sections. A member of staff will hand you a printout showing your scores for each section and whether you’ve passed or failed.
If you pass, you’ll receive a theory test certificate (the pass letter). This certificate is valid for two years, during which time you must pass your practical driving test. If you don’t pass the practical within two years, you’ll need to retake and pass the theory test again.
If you fail, the printout will show which areas you scored poorly in, helping you focus your revision for a retake. You can rebook as soon as three working days after a failed attempt.
The total appointment time is approximately 90 minutes, including registration, the multiple-choice test (57 minutes), a short break, the hazard perception test (around 20 minutes), and receiving your results.
Can I take the theory test before I start driving lessons?
Yes, absolutely. You can take the theory test as soon as you have a valid provisional driving licence, regardless of whether you’ve started lessons. Many learners choose to get the theory test out of the way early.
Is the theory test done on paper or computer?
The test is entirely computer-based. You don’t need any special computer skills — just the ability to click a mouse and read on-screen questions.
Can I request extra time or special accommodations?
Yes. If you have a reading difficulty, disability, or other condition that may affect your ability to take the test, you can request accommodations such as extra time, a voiceover in English, or a British Sign Language interpreter. Request these when booking.
What languages is the theory test available in?
The theory test is available in English and Welsh. A voiceover option in English is also available for candidates who find it easier to listen to the questions. The test is not available in other languages.
