The UK theory test is conducted at Pearson VUE test centres — there are over 150 of them across England, Scotland, and Wales. These are dedicated testing facilities (not DVSA driving test centres) that handle various computer-based examinations. Most major towns and cities have at least one theory test centre, and many urban areas have several to choose from.
Theory test centres are completely separate from the practical driving test centres where you take your driving test. You do not need to take your theory test at a centre near where you plan to do your practical — you can sit the theory test at any centre in the UK regardless of your home address.
The easiest way to find your nearest theory test centre is through the booking process on GOV.UK. When you begin booking your test, you enter your postcode and the system shows available centres sorted by distance, along with their next available dates. This lets you compare waiting times across nearby centres and choose the most convenient option.
You can also search for Pearson VUE test centres directly on the Pearson VUE website, though booking must still be done through GOV.UK.
While the test itself is identical at every centre, there are practical differences worth considering when choosing where to sit your exam:
Waiting times vary significantly. Centres in busy urban areas like London, Birmingham, and Manchester often have longer waiting lists (sometimes four to six weeks), while smaller towns may have availability within one to two weeks. If you are in a hurry, check centres slightly further from your home — a 30-minute drive could save you weeks of waiting.
Consider transport and parking. You need to arrive at least 15 minutes before your appointment, so factor in travel time and potential traffic. Check whether the centre has free parking or whether you will need to use public transport. Many centres are located in business parks or retail areas with good parking facilities.
Time of day matters. Early morning slots (8:30-9:00 am) and mid-week appointments tend to have better availability. If you are a morning person, these slots also mean you take the test when you are most alert.

Theory test centres are professional, quiet environments designed for focused testing. When you arrive, you will check in at reception with your provisional driving licence. Your photo will be taken for identification purposes. You will be asked to store all personal belongings in a locker — no phones, watches, bags, or study materials are allowed in the test room.
You will then be escorted to a computer workstation in a supervised room. Each station has a screen, mouse, and headphones (for the hazard perception section). The room is monitored by invigilators throughout the test. After completing both sections, you return to reception to collect your belongings and receive your results.
A common source of confusion: theory test centres (Pearson VUE) and practical driving test centres (DVSA) are different places. Your theory test centre is where you sit the computer-based exam. Your practical driving test centre is where you meet your examiner and begin your driving test. You choose each independently and they do not need to be in the same area.
Yes. You can book your theory test at any Pearson VUE centre regardless of where you live. This is useful if centres near you have long waiting times.
Aim to arrive at least 15 minutes before your appointment. If you arrive late, you may not be allowed to take the test and will lose your fee.
Many centres offer Saturday appointments, though availability varies by location. Weekend slots tend to fill up faster, so book early if you need a Saturday test.
