What to Expect on the Theory Test: A Complete Guide for 2026

Before You Arrive

Your theory test takes place at a Pearson Vue test centre — there are over 150 across the UK. You will receive a booking confirmation with the address, date, and time. Plan your journey so you arrive at least 15 minutes early, as late arrivals may be turned away without a refund.

Bring your provisional driving licence photocard. If you have an old-style paper licence, bring a valid passport too. Without the correct identification, you will not be admitted.

Arriving at the Test Centre

At reception, staff will check your identification and ask you to store your personal belongings — phone, keys, wallet, bag — in a locker. You cannot take anything into the test room. You will be given a locker key and may be asked to turn out your pockets.

You will then be escorted to a computer workstation. Each candidate has their own screen, headphones, and mouse. The room is monitored by CCTV throughout.

The Multiple-Choice Section

You begin with 50 multiple-choice questions. A timer on screen counts down from 57 minutes. You can flag questions to review later and navigate back and forth through the test. Some questions include images or case studies — read them carefully.

The interface is straightforward: select your answer and click “Next.” You can change your answers at any time before submitting. Once you are satisfied, submit the section and take a short break (up to 3 minutes) before hazard perception begins.

The Hazard Perception Section

After the break, you watch 14 one-minute video clips. Each shows a driving scenario filmed from the driver’s seat. Click the mouse when you see a developing hazard — something that would cause a real driver to change speed or direction. One clip contains two hazards; the rest have one each.

There is no pause or rewind. Each clip plays once, and you cannot go back. The test ends automatically after the final clip.

Getting Your Results

Results are available immediately. You will be handed a printout at the reception desk showing your scores for both sections. If you passed both parts, congratulations — your theory test certificate is now valid for two years. If you failed either part, the printout will show which section you need to improve.

Your result is also available online through your DVSA account within a few days.

What If You Fail?

If you fail, you must wait at least 3 working days before rebooking. Use that time to revise the areas where you lost marks. Many candidates pass on their second attempt after targeted practice.
