How to Cancel Your Theory Test (2026 UK Guide)

Plans change, and sometimes you need to cancel or reschedule your theory test. Whether you’re not feeling well, haven’t had enough time to revise, or simply need a different date, the process is straightforward — as long as you give enough notice.

The 3 Working Days Rule

To cancel or reschedule your theory test without losing your fee, you must give at least 3 clear working days’ notice. Working days are Monday to Saturday, excluding bank holidays. Sundays and bank holidays don’t count towards the three days.

For example, if your test is on Thursday, you’d need to cancel by the end of the previous Friday at the latest (Saturday, Sunday, Monday = 3 working days before Thursday). If your test is on a Monday, you’d need to cancel by the previous Tuesday.

If you cancel with sufficient notice, you’ll receive a full refund or can rebook for a new date at no extra cost. If you cancel with less than 3 working days’ notice, or simply don’t turn up, you’ll lose your entire £23 fee.

How to Cancel Online

The quickest way to cancel is through the GOV.UK website. Here’s the process:

Go to the DVSA theory test booking service at gov.uk. Select “change, check, or cancel your theory test booking.” Enter your driving licence number and the booking reference number you received when you booked. You’ll then see options to cancel the test entirely or change the date.

If you want to reschedule rather than cancel outright, choosing “change” lets you pick a new date and time at the same or a different test centre without paying again. This is usually the better option if you still intend to take the test — it saves you the hassle of going through the entire booking process again later.

Cancelling by Phone

If you prefer speaking to someone, you can cancel by calling the DVSA theory test booking line on 0300 200 1122. The line is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm. You’ll need your booking reference number and provisional driving licence number. The advisor can process your cancellation or help you rebook for a different date.

What If You’re Ill on Test Day?

If you fall ill on the day of your test and it’s too late to cancel within the 3-day notice period, you may still be able to get a refund in exceptional circumstances. You’ll need to provide evidence such as a doctor’s note or medical certificate. Contact the DVSA as soon as possible to explain your situation — they assess these requests on a case-by-case basis, and there’s no guarantee of a refund.

The same applies to genuine emergencies such as a family bereavement or a serious travel disruption (significant flooding, for example). The sooner you contact the DVSA, the better your chances of a sympathetic outcome.

Should You Cancel or Push Through?

Sometimes the decision to cancel isn’t clear-cut. If you’re feeling underprepared, ask yourself whether another week or two of revision would genuinely make a difference or whether you’re just nervous. Pre-test nerves are normal and often fade once you sit down and start answering questions.

On the other hand, if you’ve barely started revising and you know you’re not ready, there’s no shame in rescheduling. Taking the test underprepared almost always results in a fail, which means you’ll pay £23 again and wait for a new appointment. Better to postpone, prepare properly, and give yourself the best chance of passing.

Rescheduling Strategies

When rebooking, consider choosing a date that gives you a specific, achievable revision target. If you need two more weeks of study, book a test exactly two weeks out. Having a firm deadline helps maintain motivation and focus.

Also consider the time of day. Some people perform better in the morning when they’re fresh, while others prefer afternoon appointments. Choose whatever suits your natural rhythm — it’s a small detail, but comfort makes a difference when you’re under exam conditions.

Use the extra time wisely. If you’ve downloaded the Exam Routes app, take advantage of it to explore the roads around your local test centre. Understanding real driving environments helps make theory test scenarios feel more relatable and easier to answer correctly.

Quick Reference

Cancel with 3+ working days’ notice: full refund or free rebook. Cancel with less notice or no-show: lose your £23. Cancel online at GOV.UK or call 0300 200 1122. If ill on the day, contact DVSA with evidence for a possible exception. When in doubt, rescheduling beats taking a test you’re not ready for.
