Leicester has two DVSA driving test centres: Leicester (Cannock Street) in the city centre and Leicester (Wigston) to the south. Both are busy centres serving one of the largest cities in the East Midlands, and both have pass rates below the national average — meaning preparation is essential.
Cannock Street is located off the A607, close to the city centre. Wigston is situated on the southern edge of the city near the A5460. Whichever centre you are booked at, expect a mix of urban roads, multi-lane roundabouts, and residential streets.
Leicester’s pass rates sit notably below the national average of around 47-48%. Cannock Street has an average pass rate of approximately 43%, while Wigston manages around 46%. The challenging road layout and busy traffic conditions in the city contribute to these figures.
Do not let these numbers discourage you — they reflect the difficulty of the roads, not the impossibility of passing. Candidates who practise the local routes thoroughly have a much higher success rate.
From Cannock Street, routes typically head out along Victoria Road East, Barkby Road, Keyham Lane, and Thurmaston Lane. You will encounter busy junctions almost immediately, including the traffic lights on Gipsy Lane within 30 seconds of leaving the centre. Routes frequently include dual carriageways and multi-lane roundabouts in the surrounding area.
From Wigston, expect routes along the A5460, through residential areas of Wigston and Oadby, and onto faster roads like the Blaby Bypass. The mix of quiet residential streets and higher-speed roads tests your ability to adapt your driving to different environments.
Troon Way Roundabout: This large multi-lane roundabout near the Cannock Street centre catches many learners out. Lane discipline is crucial — you must be in the correct lane well in advance and maintain your position through the roundabout. Hesitation here causes problems with following traffic.
Pork Pie Island: One of Leicester’s most well-known roundabouts in the south of the city. It is large, busy, and requires confident lane changes. Practise this one repeatedly until you feel comfortable.
A607 Roundabout: The road markings around this junction can be confusing. Study the lane arrows carefully and commit them to memory before your test.
Gipsy Lane Junction: Just seconds after leaving Cannock Street, you will hit traffic lights at Gipsy Lane. Being nervous at the start of your test can lead to mistakes here — practise the immediate departure route several times.
Asquith Way Roundabout (Wigston): A complex roundabout requiring careful observation and decisive lane positioning. Approach in the correct lane and signal clearly.
Blaby Bypass: A higher-speed road used on Wigston routes. Ensure you are confident driving at national speed limit and can merge safely.

Master the roundabouts. Leicester’s multi-lane roundabouts are the biggest challenge. Practise Troon Way, Pork Pie Island, and Asquith Way until they feel routine. Focus on checking mirrors, signalling, and maintaining lane position.
Practise the first 5 minutes. The route from the test centre onto the main roads is where nerves peak. Drive the departure route several times so it becomes second nature.
Be ready for dual carriageways. Both centres use routes with faster-moving roads. Practise joining and leaving dual carriageways safely, including mirror checks and matching traffic speed.
Watch your speed in residential areas. After the intensity of roundabouts and dual carriageways, it is easy to carry too much speed into 20mph zones. Stay alert to speed limit changes.
Read road markings carefully. Several junctions around Leicester have non-standard or confusing lane markings. Always look at the road surface well in advance.
The Exam Routes App gives you access to real driving test routes from Leicester’s test centres with turn-by-turn navigation. You can drive the routes at your own pace, learning every junction, roundabout, and tricky spot before your test. Building this familiarity removes the element of surprise and helps you focus on your driving rather than navigation.
Wigston has a slightly higher pass rate (46% vs 43%), but the routes are different rather than easier. Choose the centre whose local roads you know best.
No. Driving tests do not include motorway driving. You may use dual carriageways, but not the M1 or any motorway.
Limited parking is available near both centres. Cannock Street has some on-street parking, while Wigston has more options nearby. Arrive early to find a space.
You can accumulate up to 15 minor (driving) faults and still pass. One serious or dangerous fault results in a fail.
