One of the more persistent patterns in UK driving test statistics is the gap between male and female pass rates — and it runs in opposite directions depending on which test you are looking at. On the theory test, the pattern reverses. Female candidates have consistently recorded higher pass rates than male candidates, across both the multiple-choice and hazard perception elements in the published data.
That reversal is the most important thing in this whole dataset, because it undermines any simple story about one group being “better at driving”. Whatever is happening, it is test-specific rather than ability-wide.
The DVSA publishes the numbers but does not publish causes, so what follows is the range of explanations researchers and instructors commonly put forward — not settled fact.
Test-taking approach. Some research suggests men are more likely to book a practical test earlier in their learning, at a point where they feel ready rather than when their instructor confirms they are. That would mean more attempts overall and, potentially, a different distribution of outcomes. Others argue the opposite effect — that a willingness to book earlier is offset by more confident driving on the day.
Confidence versus caution. Examiners mark both over-confidence (excessive speed, insufficient observation) and under-confidence (failing to make progress, undue hesitation). Practice hours and access. Access to a car for private practice between lessons varies considerably and is one of the strongest known predictors of passing. Any systematic difference in access would show up in the pass rate.
Anxiety and test-day pressure. Test anxiety is well documented as a performance factor and is reported at different rates across groups. It affects the practical test far more than a written test taken at a desk, which fits the direction of the two gaps neatly.
The honest position is that no single explanation accounts for it, and the DVSA has never claimed one does.
