More driving tests are lost before the engine starts than most learners realise. Every year the DVSA cancels tests on the spot because a candidate turned up without the right licence, in a car that was not legal, or with a windscreen chip in the wrong place. When that happens you lose the fee and the slot — and under the 2026 booking rules, getting another one is harder than it used to be.
This is the complete test day checklist for 2026: the documents you must bring, what your car has to have, what to do the night before, and how to use the last thirty minutes properly.
Check the expiry date on your provisional licence now, not on the morning of the test. Photocard licences expire every ten years and an out-of-date card will stop your test.
If you are using your own car rather than your instructor’s, the responsibility for it being test-legal is yours. The DVSA is strict, and examiners do refuse vehicles.
Certain vehicles are excluded, including some convertibles and vans where the examiner’s view is restricted, and any car that is the subject of an outstanding safety recall that has not been fixed. If you are unsure, check with your instructor or the DVSA before the day, not on the morning.
The Exam Routes App gives you access to real driving test routes with turn-by-turn navigation. Practise at your own pace and build confidence before test day.
Arrive about ten minutes early. Much earlier and you will sit and stew; later and you are rushing. Most instructors use the last half hour for a short warm-up drive, and that is genuinely useful — it gets your inputs smooth and your observation switched on before the examiner is in the car.
You will be asked to sign a declaration confirming your insurance and residency. Then comes the eyesight check: reading a number plate from 20 metres for newer style plates, or 20.5 metres for older ones. If you need glasses or lenses, wear them — and keep wearing them for the whole test.
You will get one “tell me” question before you drive off and one “show me” question while driving. Both are worth one driving fault at most, so do not let a shaky answer follow you into the drive. Answer, move on, forget it.
Preparation is not only paperwork. Knowing the roads around your test centre removes a huge amount of test-day tension. The Exam Routes App gives you real driving test routes with turn-by-turn navigation so you can practise the junctions, roundabouts and residential streets your examiner is likely to use.
What documents do I need for my driving test in 2026?
Your UK photocard provisional driving licence is the essential one. Bring your booking confirmation too. If you hold an old paper licence you will also need valid photo ID such as a passport.
Can I use my own car for the driving test?
Yes, provided it meets the DVSA requirements: taxed, insured for the test, MOT valid if applicable, L plates fitted, an extra interior mirror for the examiner, legal tyres, no dashboard warning lights and a clear windscreen.
What happens if I forget my licence?
The test will not go ahead, you will lose the fee, and you will need to book again. There is no discretion on this.
Will my test be cancelled for rain?
No. Ordinary rain is part of driving. Tests are only cancelled for genuinely unsafe conditions such as ice, flooding, fog or high winds.
How early should I arrive?
About ten minutes before your slot. Long enough not to be rushed, short enough that you are not sitting in the waiting room building up nerves.
Can I have someone with me during the test?
Yes. Your instructor or another accompanying adult over 16 may sit in the back, if you and the examiner agree. They cannot take part in the test.
Download the Exam Routes App and drive the roads your examiner uses before you sit in the car on test day. Turn-by-turn navigation, real routes, and hundreds of UK test centres covered.
