How to Drive Eco-Safely on Test Day

Use block gear changes

Modern practice is to skip gears where appropriate — third straight to fifth on a clear road, or fifth straight to second approaching a junction, using the brakes to slow and the gear to drive away. Sequential changes through every gear waste time, fuel and attention.

Ease off rather than brake late

Coming to a red light, release the accelerator early and let engine braking and momentum do the work. If the light changes while you are still rolling, you carry on smoothly — and you have avoided a stop altogether.

Accelerate progressively

Firm enough to make proper progress, gentle enough that the car does not lurch. Making progress is assessed; screeching away from a junction is not the same thing.
