How can we help?

Getting started

What is Exam Routes?

Exam Routes is a driving test preparation app for UK learners. It gives you turn-by-turn navigation on the roads and junctions around your local driving test centre, so the route you drive on test day is not the first time you have seen it.

Version 2.1 also added theory test practice, so you can revise for the theory test in the same app.

How do I get started?
  1. Download Exam Routes from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Find your local test centre in the app.
  3. Unlock that centre to get its routes.
  4. Drive the routes with your instructor or supervising driver, following the turn-by-turn guidance.

You can start anywhere on a route, so you can go back and drill a single junction that keeps catching you out.

Do I need a driving instructor to use it?

No — the app works whether you are with an instructor or a supervising driver. But the normal rules still apply: as a learner you must be supervised by someone who is at least 21, has held a full licence for the relevant category for three years or more, and the car must be correctly insured and display L plates.

Never use the app while driving unsupervised, and never operate your phone by hand while driving.

Routes & navigation

How the routes work and how to drive them.

Where do the routes come from?

They are recorded from the roads around each test centre — the roads, junctions and manoeuvre spots that examiners at that centre actually use.

Are these the exact routes my examiner will use?

We want to be straight with you about this. The DVSA stopped publishing official test routes in 2010, and examiners choose the route on the day. So no app can promise you the precise route you will be given.

What Exam Routes does is cover the roads, junctions and manoeuvre spots commonly used around your test centre. The goal is that whatever route you are given, you have driven those roads before.

Can I practise just one part of a route?

Yes. You can start anywhere on a route rather than driving it from the beginning, which is useful when one particular roundabout or junction is the bit you keep getting wrong.

How does the navigation work?

The app guides you through the route turn by turn, in the order an examiner would take it, so your supervising driver does not have to read directions from a screen.

As with any navigation app, set it up before you move off and keep your eyes on the road.

Theory practice

The theory test practice built into the app.

Is theory practice included?

Yes. Version 2.1 brought theory test practice into the app, with over 1,000 practice questions covering the topics on the UK car theory test.

These are our own practice questions written to match the theory test syllabus. They are not the official DVSA revision materials, and Exam Routes is not affiliated with or endorsed by the DVSA.

Does theory practice include hazard perception?

Not yet. The theory practice covers the multiple-choice questions, but hazard perception clips are not included.

We are working on adding them in a future release.

Payments

What you pay for and how it works.

How much does Exam Routes cost?

The one-time payment unlocks the routes for the single test centre you choose.

Theory test questions and driving instructor profiles are sold separately as subscriptions.

Current prices are shown on the App Store and Google Play listings, and inside the app before you buy.

Is Exam Routes a subscription?

No. Exam Routes is a one-time payment — there is no recurring charge and nothing to cancel.

Do I pay per test centre?

Yes. You unlock the test centre you are taking your test at, and that centre stays unlocked. If you later move or change centres, you unlock the new one.

Can I get a refund?

Purchases are made through the App Store or Google Play, so refunds are handled by Apple or Google rather than by us.

If something is wrong with the app itself, tell us first with Contact us below — we may be able to fix it for you.

Test centres

Coverage, and requesting a centre.

Which test centres are covered?

You can browse the full list of covered centres inside the app. We add new locations regularly.

My test centre is not listed — can you add it?

Yes, tell us and we will look at adding it. Use Contact us at the bottom of this page, choose Request a test centre, and include the centre name and town.

App & devices

Phones, CarPlay and Android Auto.

Which devices does the app work on?

Exam Routes is available for iPhone on the App Store and for Android on Google Play.

Does it support CarPlay and Android Auto?

Yes. Exam Routes supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so the route guidance can run on your car display instead of your phone.

Does the app work without an internet connection?

No. Exam Routes needs an internet connection to work — routes, maps and theory questions are all loaded live.

Make sure you have mobile data available before you set off to practise.

Account & sign-in

Getting into your account.

Do I need an account?

Not to look around. You can browse the app and close the login screen to carry on without signing in.

You do need an account to buy anything. You can create one with your email address, or sign in to an existing one.

If your account was created a while ago using your phone number, sign in with the phone number rather than an email address.

I cannot sign in

Which method you need depends on when the account was made:

  • Older accounts were created with a phone number — sign in with the phone number.
  • Newer accounts use an email address.

Forgotten your password? Choose the reset option on the sign-in screen and we will email you a link to set a new one.

Still stuck? Use Contact us below and tell us which method you signed up with.

Troubleshooting

When something is not working.

The app crashes or a route will not load

Try these in order:

  1. Close the app fully and reopen it.
  2. Check you are on the latest version in the App Store or Google Play.
  3. Check your internet connection.
  4. Restart your phone.

If it still happens, report it with Contact us at the bottom of this page and tell us your device model and what you were doing when it happened — that is what lets us reproduce it.

A route or instruction looks wrong

Roads change — new roundabouts, altered priorities, closed turnings. If something does not match what is on the ground, please tell us.

Use Contact us below, choose Route problem, and include the test centre and roughly where on the route it happened. We check these and update the route.

How do I report a bug?

Use the Contact us button at the bottom of this page and choose Bug or crash. Telling us your device, the test centre and what you were doing when it went wrong makes a real difference to how fast we can fix it.

Everything you send there reaches our support team directly, and we reply to the email address you give us.

Still need a hand?

Tell us what happened and we will come back to you by email.
