The short answer: you may use the equipment fitted to your car, but you must still demonstrate full all-round observation. Technology can support you. It cannot replace looking.
The Underlying Rule
The practical test assesses whether you can drive safely and independently. Nothing in that standard bans driver assistance systems — they are standard equipment on millions of cars. What examiners will not accept is a candidate who reverses using only a screen, or who parks by sound alone without checking mirrors and blind spots.
Think of it this way: if the sensors were switched off tomorrow, would your driving still be safe? That is the question every examiner is silently asking.
Parking Sensors and Reversing Cameras
These are the most common questions, and the answer is reassuring: you can use them. During a reversing manoeuvre the examiner wants to see effective all-round observation — over your shoulder, through the rear window, into both mirrors, and checking for approaching traffic and pedestrians. Glancing at a camera or listening to the sensors is fine alongside that.
The failure mode is predictable. A candidate reverses staring at the screen, misses a pedestrian stepping off the kerb behind them, and picks up a serious fault for observation. The camera showed a narrow rectangle of tarmac; the danger was outside it.

Hill Start Assist
Hill start assist holds the brakes for a second or two after you lift off the pedal, giving you time to move your foot to the accelerator. It is useful, and there is no rule against it.
The catch is that it hides poor clutch control. If you have only ever started on hills with assist doing the work, you may struggle on a steep gradient where the system releases before you find the biting point — and rolling back significantly towards a following vehicle can be a serious fault. Cruise Control and Adaptive Cruise
Cruise control is legal and can be used, but on a typical test route it is rarely appropriate. Test routes are full of speed limit changes, junctions, roundabouts and hazards — exactly the conditions where you should be actively managing your speed. Setting cruise control on a short national speed limit stretch and then having to cancel it three times in two minutes looks like poor planning rather than good control.
Adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist go further, actively adjusting speed and steering. These are best switched off for a test. You are being assessed on your ability to control the vehicle, and a system that steers or brakes for you muddies that assessment.
