Booking Your Theory Test in 2026: Costs, Rules and What Happens on the Day

Before you can book a practical driving test, you need a theory test pass. And before you can sit the theory test, you need to book it properly — through the official DVSA service, at the official price, with the right documents ready. Every year thousands of learners lose money to third-party booking sites, turn up without valid ID, or miss a change deadline by a day. None of that is necessary.

What the Theory Test Costs in 2026

The car theory test fee is £23. That is the price on the official GOV.UK booking service, and it covers both parts of the test — the multiple-choice section and the hazard perception section — in a single appointment.

You will see websites charging £40, £50 or more. Those are unofficial booking agents. They will book the same test at the same centre, on the same DVSA system, and keep the difference as a “service fee”. Some also sign you up to recurring charges. How to Book Your Theory Test

1. Get your provisional licence first. You cannot book without a valid provisional driving licence number.
2. Go to the official GOV.UK service. Check the address carefully — sponsored search results are frequently third-party resellers.
3. Enter your licence number and contact details. Use an email address you actually check; your confirmation and booking reference arrive there.
4. Choose your test centre. Theory test centres are separate from practical test centres and there are far more of them. Pick one you can realistically reach.
5. Pick a date and pay £23. Keep the booking reference — you need it to change or cancel.
6. Declare any support needs at the time of booking. Extra time, a reader, a British Sign Language interpreter or voiceover can all be arranged, but they must be requested when you book.

Changing or Cancelling: The Three Working Day Rule

Theory tests follow a three clear working days notice rule. Give at least that much notice and you can change the date, time or test centre free of charge — your £23 transfers to the new appointment. Give less, and you lose the fee entirely and have to book and pay again.

Two details catch people out:

• Working days include Saturdays. DVSA counts Monday to Saturday, excluding Sundays and bank holidays.
• The day of the test and the day you make the change do not count. “Three clear working days” means three full days in between.

You can make a limited number of changes to a single booking — typically up to six — before you have to rebook from scratch. Note that the practical driving test has a different, longer notice period, so do not assume the two work the same way.

What Happens on the Day

Arrive at least 15 minutes early. You must bring your provisional photocard driving licence. If you do not have it, or the photo has expired, you will not be allowed to sit the test and you will lose your fee.

You will be asked to store your belongings in a locker — phones, smartwatches, bags and notes are not permitted in the test room. You will then be shown to a computer terminal.

Part one: multiple choice

50 questions in 57 minutes, drawn from the Highway Code, road signs, vehicle handling and safety. The pass mark is 43 out of 50. You can flag questions to revisit and review your answers before submitting. Part two: hazard perception

After an optional three-minute break, you watch 14 video clips containing 15 developing hazards. You click when you spot a hazard developing. Scoring runs from 5 points down to 0 depending on how early you react, and the pass mark is 44 out of 75. Clicking continuously or in an obvious rhythm scores zero for that clip — the system detects it.

You must pass both sections in the same sitting. Pass one and fail the other, and you retake the whole test.

After You Pass

You get your result before you leave the centre, along with a pass certificate number. That certificate is valid for two years. If you have not passed your practical driving test within that window, the theory pass expires and you must take it again — there are no extensions.

Given current practical test waiting times, this matters more than it used to. Book your practical as soon as you sensibly can after passing theory, and keep the two-year expiry date somewhere you will see it.

Booking Mistakes to Avoid

• Using an unofficial site. Same test, higher price, occasional subscription traps.
• Booking before you have revised. The national theory pass rate has been sitting well under 50%. Turning up unprepared is an expensive way to find that out.
• Forgetting the photocard. No licence, no test, no refund.
• Missing the three-day window. Set a calendar reminder four working days before your test.
• Booking a centre you cannot reach. Check the journey, especially if the test is early morning.
• Leaving the practical too late. Two years sounds generous until you are three months into a waiting list.
