Understanding the driving test cancellation cost before you make any changes to your booking can save you money and stress. Whether you’re considering cancelling outright, moving to a cancellation slot, or your test is cancelled by the DVSA, the rules around fees and refunds are worth knowing inside out.
As of 2026, the standard DVSA practical driving test fee is £62 for weekdays and £75 for evenings, weekends, and bank holidays. These fees are set by the DVSA and are the same at every test centre in England, Scotland, and Wales (Northern Ireland uses DVA and has slightly different pricing).
The cost of cancelling depends on how much notice you give:
The “3 clear working days” rule excludes weekends, bank holidays, and the day of the test itself. So if your test is on a Friday, you must cancel by the previous Monday (assuming no bank holidays in between) to receive a refund.
Rescheduling is free — provided you give at least 3 clear working days’ notice before your existing test date. There is no charge to move your booking to an earlier cancellation slot. This is an important distinction: you are not cancelling and rebooking (which would mean paying again), you are simply changing the date of your existing booking.
If you reschedule with less than 3 working days’ notice — even to an earlier slot — you will lose your original fee and need to pay again for the new booking.

If the DVSA cancels your test — due to examiner illness, bad weather, or administrative reasons — you are entitled to a full refund or a free rescheduled date, your choice. The DVSA aims to give you as much notice as possible in these circumstances, but short-notice cancellations do occur.
If you believe a DVSA cancellation was handled unfairly or you incurred costs as a result (such as instructor fees for a lesson that day), you can raise a complaint with the DVSA directly through their customer services team.
No. Monday to Wednesday is only two working days. You would need to cancel by the Friday before (three clear working days before the Wednesday test) to receive a refund.
No. DVSA test bookings are personal and non-transferable. If you cancel, the slot is released back into the system for other learners.
Yes. If you fail, you’ll need to book and pay for a new test. You must wait at least 10 working days before you can take the test again.
Refunds are processed back to the original payment method. The DVSA typically processes refunds within 3-10 working days. If your refund hasn’t arrived after two weeks, contact the DVSA directly.
